A leap year is a year containing one or more extra days in order to keep the calendar year synchronised with the astronomical or seasonal year. For example, in the Gregorian calender, February would have 29 days in a leap year instead of the usual 28.
Because seasons and astronomical events do not repeat at an exact number of full days, a calendar which had the same number of days in each year would, over time, drift with respect to the event it was supposed to track. By occasionally inserting an additional day or month into the year, the drift can be corrected. A year which is not a leap year is called a common year.
Odd Leap Year Factoid...
In the English speaking world, it is a tradition that women may propose marriage only on leap years. While it has been argued that the tradition was initiated by Saint Patrick or Brigid of Kildare in 5th century Ireland, it is dubious as the tradition has not been attested before the 19th century.
Supposedly, a 1288 law by Queen Margaret of Scotland (then age five and living in Norway), required that fines be levied if a marriage proposal was refused by the man; compensation ranged from a kiss to £1 to a silk gown, in order to soften the blow. Because men felt that put them at too great a risk, the tradition was in some places tightened to restricting female proposals to the modern leap day, 29 February, or to the medieval leap day, 24 February.
According to Felten: "A play from the turn of the 17th century, 'The Maydes Metamorphosis,' has it that 'this is leap year/women wear breeches.' A few hundred years later, breeches wouldn't do at all: Women looking to take advantage of their opportunity to pitch woo were expected to wear a scarlet petticoat -- fair warning, if you will."
In Greece, it is believed that getting married in a leap year is bad luck for the couple. Thus, mainly in the middle of the past century, couples avoided setting a marriage date in a leap year.

In Memory
Janice Marie Sestile of Sylvania Township passed away on February 23, 2008, at the Cleveland Clinic. She was 58 years old. After suffering a debilitating heart attack in 1996, Janice was blessed a year later to receive the selfless gift of organ donation from a Dayton family in coordination with Life Connection of Ohio, the United Network of Organ Sharing, and the transplant team at University Medical Center (then MCO).
Jan appreciated the gift she received and the extra time she was granted each and every day of the last twelve years. With that time, she was able, with her husband, Richard, to see the college and law school graduations of her daughters, Lindsay and Lisa, and their weddings to her two sons-in-law, Chad Gonia and Shawn Corcoran. She also delighted in her role as a new grandma after her first granddaughter, AnnaLucia Marie Gonia, was born on April 13, 2007.
In addition to her immediate family, Jan is survived by her parents, Charles and Thelma Powell; her brother, Timothy Powell, and her sisters, Linda Mettert, Regina Kent, Elaine Abbott, and Laura Barone, and all their respective families.
By all who knew her, Jan will be remembered as the best kind of friend, one who knew no strangers, whose empathy was real, and whose devotion was unmatched.
Visitation will take place Friday, February 29, 2008 from 4-8 p.m. at Reeb Funeral Home (5712 Main Street, Sylvania, OH 43560), and the funeral will be on Saturday, March 1, 2008 at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 10 a.m. (5373 Main Street, Sylvania, OH 43560)
In lieu of flowers, Jan's family asks that any donations be made to Life Connection of Ohio, 3661 Briarfield Blvd., Suite 105, Maumee, OH 43537.
