Update #5

We survived the "experience" at Mackinac Island. We took the Star Line Ferry over to the island. The boys said it was a little faster than Grandpa's boat. The island was really crowded and it was hard to get around with three little kids. We rented bikes and started to ride around the island, but Sam was tired of it fairly soon. He was on his bike which we brought over from the camp site. Lee's rental bike pulled Joah and Caleb in a pull behind wagon.

We had the bikes for four hours and turned them in and just walked around the rest of the time. We trekked up to Arch Rock through the woods. I had to carry Caleb because he was so slow. The steps were very steep and narrow, too. It was a beautiful day and we saw a lot of nice sites. It is such a gorgeous place to admire.

However, the smell was awful. There were a whole lot of horses all over and their poop piles. I felt sorry for the guys whose job it was to go around all day and pick up horse crap. The smell was constant, you could never get away from it no matter where you went. I think they should ban horses and let people drive golf carts all over the place. We were sitting on a bench resting and a horse carriage stoped right in front of us and one of the horses peed all over the place. Caleb was quite impressed.

It was just so crowded it really took away from the experience there. I would probably not go back with little kids. It was too hard keeping track of them, keeping them out of the way of the horses, bikes and other people. We did find a few nice parks for the kids to play and we sat and enjoyed the views. I did buy some fudge and saltwater taffy, it is practically a requirement if you go there.

We caught the 8:00 ferry back to Mackinaw City and spent the rest of the evening at the camp site. We had our final bon fire for the trip. We made s'mores but instead of Hershey's chocolate bars we used Reese's peanut butter cups. They were pretty good!

This morning I awoke to the evil seagulls squawking and flailing about outside of our camper. It appears the neighbors put a bag of garbage on top of their Jeep and the birds are fighting over it and ripping it to shreds. He has garbage all over his SUV. I imagine the top is all scratched up from their little claws, too. Those birds are nasty, aggressive scavengers. Caleb calls them eagles, not seagulls.

We are headed out of here today. We have to check out by 11:00 a.m. I am ready to go. It has been a fun trip overall, but I am so ready to sleep in my big bed. I think we are going to stop at the lighthouse and maybe Mill Creek before we head out of town. We bought tickets already for those places but did not go because it was raining the other day.

See you later.
